Crayons on the Run

Clink, clank! Rosy dropped her favorite purple crayon into her shiny tin box. Today was the big day. She was finally going to her very first day at preschool, and she needed her best tools.

Mama zipped up The Purple Backpack with a satisfying zzz-zip! Inside sat the crayons, three paper drawings of flying castles, and one very special passenger. Fish swam in circles in his travel bowl, bubbles popping excitedly.

"Are we ready for the great journey?" Mama asked, holding open the front door. Rosy stood tall, puffing out her chest like a brave explorer. She gave a firm nod and marched out onto the sunny street.

The sidewalk was a wild jungle of swirling leaves. Rosy held her drawings tightly, showing them to Fish. "Look, Fish! This is the purple dragon we are going to meet!" Fish blew a big, watery bubble of approval.

Suddenly, a cheeky gust of wind went swish-swoosh! It snatched the dragon drawing right out of Rosy's fingers. "Oh no!" Rosy gasped, her eyes growing as wide as saucers. "My dragon is flying away!"

The drawing soared up, up, up! It did a silly loop-de-loop around a low tree branch. Rosy giggled through her surprise. "He really is a flying dragon!" she cheered, chasing the paper as it danced in the air.

With a heroic leap, Rosy snatched the paper. Got it! But another gust tickled her nose. Swoop! The second drawing, a picture of a giant rainbow cookie, flew straight toward a sleepy dog resting on a porch.

"Stop that cookie!" Rosy shouted playfully. She zoomed past Mama, her sneakers squeaking on the pavement. She grabbed the paper just before the dog could sniff it. The dog gave a friendly, sleepy wag of its tail.

Mama laughed, holding Fish's bowl steady. "You are the fastest paper-catcher in the whole wide world, Rosy!" Rosy beamed, tucking the drawings safely under her arm. "I am the Wind Queen!" she declared proudly.

At last, they arrived at Sunflower Preschool. The big blue door looked friendly, and the sound of children laughing floated outside. Rosy took a deep breath, holding Mama's hand a little tighter for just one second.

Inside, the classroom was a wonderland of toys and blocks. A kind teacher smiled warmly. Rosy found her very own cubby, with her name written in big, bright letters. "This is my castle!" Rosy whispered.

Rosy unpacked her things. She placed Fish's bowl safely on a nearby shelf where he could watch. Then, she carefully taped her rescued drawings inside her cubby. The purple dragon looked perfect right next to her backpack.

Mama knelt down and gave Rosy a giant, warm hug. "Have the best day, my brave painter," she whispered. Rosy hugged back hard, feeling ready. She waved as Mama walked to the door, Fish blowing bubbles of encouragement.

The teacher clapped her hands. "Who wants to decorate real cookies?" she asked. Rosy gasped with delight. On the table sat a plate of beautiful, striped Rainbow Cookies, waiting for sprinkles. Rosy grabbed a purple crayon to start her next masterpiece.
