Baking for the Moon
Flour dusted the air like tiny, silent snowflakes. Rosy stood on her sturdy wooden stool, humming a little song she made up as she worked. Tonight, she had a very important job to do.
Beside her, Mama smiled and held the big mixing bowl steady. Inside, a magical mixture of lavender flour and sweet starlight was turning into something wonderful. It was the perfect recipe for a sleepy night.
Rosy poured a cup of sparkling silver glitter into the bowl. She stirred and stirred, watching the purple dough swirl. Fish, swimming in his round glass bowl on the counter, blew three perfect bubbles of approval.
Mama scooped the fluffy purple dough into a shiny baking pan. 'The Moon looks so tired tonight,' Rosy whispered, looking out the dark window. 'A warm sleeping-muffin will help him have the sweetest dreams.'
Suddenly, a soft, glowing pathway of purple starlight stretched right through the open window. Fish's bowl began to float, bobbing gently in the air. Rosy gasped with delight and held the muffin pan tight.
Up, up, up they went, drifting into the cool night air. Rosy giggled as her slippers tapped against the soft, puffy clouds. The houses below looked like tiny, glowing toy boxes tucked into bed.
They landed gently in the Sky Kitchen, where the countertops were made of solid starlight. Rosy carefully slid the baking pan into the glowing cloud-oven. It smelled like warm vanilla and lavender.
Ding! The oven door popped open, and a beautiful, warm purple muffin emerged. Rosy placed three tiny, colorful candles on top. 'Now we just need to light them,' she told Fish.
But as soon as the candles flickered to life, a silly, playful breeze swept through the clouds. Swoosh! The tiny flames vanished. Rosy frowned, her lower lip trembling just a little bit.
Rosy lit the candles again, shielding them with her small hands. Swoosh! The silly breeze blew them out once more. Fish splashed his tail, trying to block the wind, but it was too quick.
Rosy took a deep breath. She was a clever baker, and she could solve this. She pulled a shiny, clear mixing bowl over the muffin like a protective glass dome, leaving just a tiny gap at the bottom.
It worked! The candles stayed lit, glowing brightly under the glass. Holding the covered muffin very carefully, Rosy and Fish floated over to the Moon's Porch, where the sleepy Moon was waiting.
The Moon leaned down, his face shining with a warm, gentle light. Rosy lifted the glass bowl, and the Moon blew a very soft, sleepy breath to extinguish the candles. He took a happy bite of the muffin.
A wave of cozy sleepiness washed over the sky. The Moon yawned, his eyes fluttering closed. Rosy felt her own eyelids growing very, very heavy as the starlight path guided them back down to Earth.
Back in her warm bedroom, Mama tucked the soft purple blanket up to Rosy's chin. Fish was already asleep in his bowl on the nightstand. Rosy smiled, feeling safe and incredibly cozy.
Mama kissed her cheek and whispered a sweet bedtime wish. Rosy snuggled deep into her pillow, looking out at the brightly glowing Moon. 'Sweet dreams, sleepy Moon,' Rosy whispered.
