Silly Sock Under the Bed
Rosy sat at her little wooden desk, holding a wooden stylus. She loved scratch-off art more than anything. With a firm scrape, she dragged the pointer across her new Black Page. Her eyes went wide with instant, bubbly excitement.
Instead of a simple rainbow picture, a bright, neon-pink trail spilled right off the paper. It leaped onto the floor! Rosy gasped, her mouth forming a perfect 'O' of pure make-believe wonder. The Glowing Pathway was real.
The glowing line snaked past her slippers, wiggled around her toy box, and headed straight for the dark gap under her bed. Rosy scrambled down onto her hands and knees. She was an independent explorer on a grand nature mission.
She lifted the dusty pink quilt and peeked into the shadows. The secret world Under the Bed was glowing. Right in the middle of the neon light sat a tiny, very round Flightless Bird. It looked completely and utterly confused.
Rosy giggled so hard her tummy hurt. The little bird was wearing her missing Pink Sock! But it was not wearing it on its feet. The stretchy pink material was pulled right over its tummy like a cozy, sleeveless sweater.
'Hello, little creature,' Rosy whispered, using her best nature-show host voice. 'Why are you wearing my clothing?' The Flightless Bird waddled forward, gave a tiny hop, and let out a squeaky chirp that sounded like a question.
Rosy gently scooped up the bird. It was as light as a marshmallow. She crawled backward out from under the bed, cradling the sock-wearing explorer in her hands. She couldn't keep this amazing discovery to herself for another second.
She ran straight to the living room where her friend Ava was building a tall block tower. 'Ava! Look!' Rosy cried, her face bursting with pride. 'I found a rare sock-bird! It is a very special under-bed species!'
Ava dropped her green block. Her jaw fell open. 'No way!' Ava gasped, leaning in close to inspect the creature. 'Is it cold? Why is it wearing your sock?' The bird blinked its big eyes and gave a cheerful wiggle.
'I think it got lost looking for a sleeping bag,' Rosy declared, nodding solemnly. The two girls sat together on the rug, gently patting the bird's soft blue head. It seemed very happy to be part of their game.
Just then, Grandpa walked into the room carrying a basket of warm, clean laundry. He stopped in his tracks, staring at the girls. He rubbed his eyes, then adjusted his glasses to make sure he was seeing correctly.
'Well, I'll be,' Grandpa chuckled, shaking his head. 'I've been looking for that pink sock to finish matching the laundry! But I see it has found a much more important job as a tiny bird sweater.'
The Flightless Bird suddenly let out a loud, happy honk. It waddled right over to Grandpa's laundry basket and flopped happily into a pile of warm, fuzzy blue towels, looking like it had found its true nest.
Rosy and Ava burst into wild laughter. Grandpa reached into the basket and pulled out a tiny, mismatched yellow sock. He gently slipped it onto the bird's head like a floppy winter hat, making everyone laugh even louder.
