Midnight Mission for a Giggle
Midnight had arrived, and the bedroom was perfectly still. Rosy lay wide awake under her pink blankets, her eyes sparkling with a secret plan. Across the room in her crib, baby sister Wren let out a tiny, sad whimper.
Rosy knew exactly what Wren needed to feel happy again. She leaned over the edge of her mattress and gave a soft, secret whistle. From the shadows, Unicorn stepped forward, his magical horn glowing with a gentle, warm light.
"We need a midnight snack," Rosy whispered, her face full of determination. "A special treat will make Wren laugh." Unicorn nodded solemnly, his hooves making no sound at all on the soft rug as they prepared for their grand mission.
They crept to the doorway, where the Scratch-Off Star gleamed in the dark. Rosy reached out and gave it a quick scratch with her fingernail, revealing a bright flash of rainbow color that made her grin with pure joy.
The hallway stretched before them like a long, dark canyon. Rosy took Unicorn's soft mane in her hand. Together, they took one brave step forward into the shadows, .
Suddenly, a tiny shape darted across the wall. It was The Tickly Shadow, stretching its long, wispy fingers. Before Rosy could run, the shadow leaped forward and tickled her nose. Rosy gasped, pinching her nostrils to stop a sneeze.
Unicorn quickly lowered his head, blowing a warm gust of air from his nose. The gentle breeze puffed against the wall, sending The Tickly Shadow sliding backward into the corner. Rosy giggled silently, her shoulders shaking with relief.
They walked on, but the wooden floorboards were treacherous. Rosy pointed to a dark knot in the wood. "Squeaky spot!" she warned. Unicorn carefully lifted his legs, stepping completely over the dangerous board with perfect grace.
At last, they reached the kitchen. The giant refrigerator stood before them, glowing with a warm, inviting light. Rosy pulled the heavy door open, revealing shelves filled with colorful jars and a bright pink bowl of sweet strawberries.
Rosy reached inside and grabbed the pink bowl. But just as she pulled it out, she heard a soft rustle behind her. She froze. Mom was standing in the doorway, rubbing her eyes and looking very sleepy.
"Rosy?" Mom whispered, blinking at the glowing fridge. "What are you doing up so late?" Rosy looked at Unicorn, then held up a bright red strawberry. "Wren is sad," Rosy explained honestly. "We need to make her laugh."
Mom's tired face softened into a warm, loving smile. She walked over and gently patted Rosy's . "You are a very good big sister," Mom whispered. "Let's go deliver this midnight treat together."
They marched back to the bedroom like a tiny parade. Rosy sat on the edge of the crib and held up a strawberry, making a silly monkey face. Wren gasped, her eyes going wide, and then she let out a loud, bubbly giggle.
With Wren happy and sleeping soundly once more, Rosy climbed back into her own cozy bed. She looked toward the closet door. There, sitting quietly on the handle, was a tiny, glowing silver button that she had never noticed before.
