A Door Painted Pink
On a golden afternoon, Oaklynn was in Tt's Art Room with Butterfly resting on her shoulder. Tt was painting a door. "It needs one more coat of pink," said Tt, swirling her brush. "Very pink," agreed Oaklynn, who was in charge of pink.
The last stroke dried, and the star-shaped knob began to glow. Jace tiptoed in, holding one bare foot. "My sock is gone," he whispered. "Poof. Right off my foot." The door gave a tiny giggle, and Butterfly's wings fluttered.
Oaklynn was fearless, so she grabbed the knob and pulled. Beyond the door glowed a lavender sky. "A sock thief lives there," she announced like a detective. Tt clapped. "An adventure! Everyone hold hands."
They stepped through and landed in the Upside-Down Meadow. Clouds lay on the grass like fat pillows, and flowers hung down like lanterns. Jace poked a cloud. It sighed and rolled over. "Rude," said Jace, and everybody laughed.
Far across the meadow, a single striped sock waved from a hilltop like a flag. But between them lay a wide stream of bubbling purple juice. Oaklynn put her hands on her hips. She needed a way across, and a good one.
Oaklynn hopped onto a cloud and started to dance. Her feet tapped, her arms swung, and the cloud bounced her to the next one. Tt sang a bouncy song, and the clouds bobbed along in time all the way across.
Jace jumped last and landed with a squish on the far bank. "Dancing clouds!" he cheered. Oaklynn took a bow, and Butterfly did a loop over her head like a tiny, polite audience.
At the hilltop stood a second Pink Door, identical to the first. The sock waved from the knob. "Aha," said Oaklynn, and she turned the star. Everyone tumbled through, into a warm orange glow.
They stood at the bottom of Sock Mountain, a hill of socks as high as a house, glowing in the sunset. Tt sighed happily. Oaklynn loved sunsets with Tt, even odd ones. "Look," said Jace. "My sock is at the very top."
They climbed up through fuzzy socks and stripy socks until they reached the top. There sat a round sock creature with button eyes, hugging Jace's sock. "Mine," it whispered. "It's so warm." Oaklynn knelt gently. "We can share."
The creature blinked. "Everyone leaves their socks behind and never visits. I only wanted friends." Oaklynn thought hard, because she was careful and thoughtful. Then she grinned. "We'll be your friends, and we'll bring you a parade."
The sock creature swapped Jace's sock for a big hug, and Jace got both. But now the sun was sinking, and the mountain was steep. Oaklynn looked down the long soft slope. They needed a ride, and a fun one.
Oaklynn spread the Giant Sock on the slope like a sled. "Everybody in, I'm the driver," she said. Jace squeezed in, then Tt, with Butterfly on the heel. Oaklynn gave one big push, and they all flew down.
They zoomed through the sunset and landed in a heap of purple socks, laughing so hard Tt got the hiccups. Right beside them, the Pink Door glowed, waiting. The sock creature waved from the peak.
Back in Tt's Art Room, the window glowed the same sunset orange. Jace wiggled his two socked toes. Tt hugged them both, and Oaklynn leaned on her shoulder. "Best ride ever," Oaklynn said. "Can we do it again, Tt?"
