Deep Water Ramps

Liam sat on the edge of the wooden pier, swinging his legs over the cool water. Beside him, Panda sat perfectly still, watching the tiny minnows dart between the wooden posts. Liam reached into his pocket and squeezed his favorite orange plastic ramp wedge, wishing he could follow those fish down into the deep, mysterious blue.

Suddenly, the lake water bubbled and swirled, rising up in a shimmering purple mist. Out stepped a tall man with a long black ponytail and a purple silk tunic that caught the sunlight. 'I am Genie,' he said with a warm smile, his gold bracelets clinking together. 'You have three wishes, Liam.'

Liam did not hesitate for a second because his imagination was already swimming. 'For my first wish, I want to breathe underwater like a fish,' Liam said, holding Panda close. Genie waved his hands, leaving a trail of purple sparkles in the air, and nodded. 'It is done,' Genie whispered.

Emma ran down the wooden pier, holding a shiny silver chain. 'Liam, look what I found in the sand!' she cheered, but as she leaned over to show him, the silver locket slipped from her fingers. With a tiny splash, the precious locket sank deep down into the dark, rocky crevices below.

Emma looked like she was about to cry, staring at the deep water. Liam patted her shoulder gently, then took a deep, brave breath. He slipped off his shoes, gripped his orange plastic wedge tightly in his hand, and plunged straight off the dock into the cool lake.

Down and down Liam swam, feeling the cool water slide past his face. He opened his mouth and took a deep breath, amazed to find he could breathe perfectly. Panda swam right beside him, paddling his paws, while the bright green lake plants waved like banners in the gentle current.

The lakebed was a whole new world of sandy hills and smooth gray stones. Liam loved how the sunbeams sliced through the water, lighting up the sandy floor like a playground. He spotted a dark rocky shelf ahead where the silver locket had disappeared into a tight, narrow crack.

As Liam got closer to the rocky shelf, he noticed a small lake turtle stuck beneath a heavy stone. The poor turtle was trying to push its way out, but the gap was simply too low. Liam knew exactly how angles worked from building his toy ramps at home.

Liam swam down to the sandy floor and gathered three flat, smooth stones. He carefully slid the flattest stone under the edge of the heavy rock, creating a gentle slope. Then he pushed the other two stones underneath to build a sturdy, rising ramp.

With the stone ramp securely in place, the heavy rock lifted just enough. The little turtle scrambled up the smooth incline Liam had built and wiggled free into the open water. It tapped Liam's hand with its shell in a silent thank-you before swimming away.

Now Liam turned his attention to the tight crevice where Emma's silver locket was wedged. The opening was far too narrow for his hands to reach inside, and the heavy rocks wouldn't budge. He needed something small and strong to hold the gap open.

Liam remembered the orange plastic wedge in his hand, the one he used for his toy ramps. He pressed the thin edge of the wedge deep into the crevice and pushed down hard. The plastic wedge held the rocks apart, creating just enough space for his fingers.

Liam reached in and pinched the silver chain, pulling the locket free. He hugged Panda underwater, his heart bursting with quiet pride. With a strong kick of his legs, Liam swam back up toward the bright, warm surface of the lake, holding the treasure high.

Liam broke through the surface, gasping the warm air as he scrambled onto the cozy lakeshore. Emma was waiting on the sand, her eyes wide with joy as Liam handed her the dry, shiny silver locket. She threw her arms around him in a giant hug.

The purple mist gathered on the sand one last time, and Genie appeared with a knowing smile. 'You have two wishes left, Liam,' Genie said, his voice soft like the afternoon breeze. Liam looked at the lake, then at his orange wedge, and smiled. 'I think I will save them for another day.'

As the sun began to dip, the three friends sat together on the warm sand, watching the gentle ripples. Emma held her locket close, while Liam turned the orange wedge over and over in his hands. He wondered if the little turtle was using his stone ramp as a slide right now.
