Floating Paper and Friendly Paws
The morning sun painted the sky in shades of peach and gold. Juni stood on the sidewalk, holding her round glass fishbowl with absolute care. Inside, Fish swam in neat, happy circles, his scales shimmering in the early light.
Tucked safely under Juni's arm were her three favorite drawings. Each paper showed the great scaled serpent of her imagination, painted with her brightest purple and gold crayons. Today was the perfect day for a grand outdoor adventure.
Juni stepped onto the soft grass of the park, her boots sinking slightly into the green lawn. She searched for the perfect spot, her eyes scanning the wide open space. Finally, she spotted a beautiful shady tree.
She carefully spread out her favorite teal checkered blanket beneath the branches. Juni set Fish's bowl right on the soft fabric so he could see the trees. She lined up her three serpent drawings beside him.
"Look, Fish," Juni whispered, pointing to the purple scales on her paper. "This is the dragon of the deep woods. He protects the flowers." Fish blew a tiny, silent bubble of agreement, his round eyes wide.
Suddenly, a playful summer breeze swirled through the branches above. It danced across the grass and snatched the three drawings right off the blanket. Juni gasped as the papers soared high into the air like paper kites.
The first drawing fluttered high over a bush, landing softly in the branches of a wild rose. Juni ran after it, her boots stomping quickly. She gently plucked the paper from the leaves, relieved to find it safe.
But the second drawing was traveling much faster. It drifted across the park boundary, sailing toward a cozy blue house. Juni watched in dismay as the paper floated right onto a sunny wooden porch.
On that very porch, Dog was enjoying a deep, peaceful morning nap. He lay stretched out on a soft woven rug, his tail twitching in a dream. The floating paper drifted down, landing inches from his heavy paws.
Juni hurried up the porch steps, her heart beating fast. She did not want to wake the sleepy pup, but she needed her drawing. She tiptoed closer, her boots making no sound at all on the warm wood.
Dog stirred, his nose twitching as he smelled the fresh park air on Juni's clothes. He stretched his front legs, yawning a giant, toothy yawn. He blinked his warm eyes and looked right at the purple serpent drawing.
Instead of stepping on it, Dog gently nudged the paper with his wet nose. He picked up the corner of the sheet with his teeth, careful not to tear the paper. He looked up at Juni, wagging his tail.
"Thank you, boy," Juni whispered, her voice filled with quiet gratitude. She patted his soft head. Dog trotted happily beside her as they walked back down the steps, carrying the precious artwork together toward the park.
They returned to the shade of the big tree. Fish swam to the front of his bowl, watching them arrive. Juni laid all three drawings flat on the blanket, placing a smooth, round stone on each one to keep them safe.
The three friends sat together on the teal checkered fabric, watching the golden leaves sway in the gentle breeze. The park was quiet, warm, and perfectly peaceful. Juni felt a deep, cozy comfort settle over her shoulders.
Juni leaned against Dog's soft side, listening to his steady breathing. She looked at her drawings, then at the blue sky above the branches. She wondered if real serpents ever flew through the clouds when nobody was looking.
