Breeze and the Golden Scales
Juni balanced on one foot in the middle of the grassy hill. She wore her favorite teal overalls, matching the bright squares of the Picnic Blanket. Beside her, Fish swam in happy loops within the clear water of The Fishbowl.
Beside the bowl lay three special papers. Juni had colored each one with her brightest crayons. They showed a magnificent creature with purple and gold scales, a secret friend she called the Sparkle-Tail who lived in her quiet thoughts.
"Look, Fish," Juni whispered, leaning close to the glass. "He has gold armor to protect him from the prickly bushes." Fish blew a tiny bubble that drifted up and popped, as if he understood the secret perfectly.
Without warning, a mischievous gust of wind swept across the grass. It snagged the edges of the papers. Swoop! The three drawings lifted into the air like paper kites, sailing high above the checkered blanket.
"Oh no!" Juni cried, her eyes wide. She grabbed The Fishbowl carefully in both hands. She could not run fast while carrying her swimming friend, but she could not leave him behind either. "Hold on tight, Fish!"
The first drawing fluttered down, catching on a low branch of a nearby oak tree. Juni marched over with determined, steady steps. She reached up with one hand, gently sliding the paper free from the leaves.
The wind carried the other two drawings past the park boundary. Juni followed the path, keeping her eyes locked on the bright purple and gold shapes. She walked out of the park and toward a quiet neighborhood street.
On the wooden porch of a yellow cottage, Dog was having a wonderful afternoon nap. He lay curled on a soft welcome mat, snoring softly. The second drawing floated down, landing directly on top of his furry back.
Juni stopped at the bottom of the porch steps. She did not want to startle her familiar friend, but the third drawing was still drifting further down the sidewalk. She needed to act quickly before it vanished completely.
"Dog, wake up!" Juni called out in a loud, clear voice. Dog opened one sleepy eye. He stretched his front paws, causing the paper on his back to slide off and land right under his heavy chin.
Dog sniffed the paper and gave a happy bark. He recognized the purple and gold creature. He stood up, shaking his tail, and picked up the drawing gently in his mouth, careful not to tear the edges.
Juni pointed down the sidewalk where the third drawing had finally landed near a mailbox. "Help me get that one, Dog!" she cheered. Dog trotted down the steps, his ears bouncing as he ran ahead to help.
Dog placed his paw gently on the last drawing just as the wind tried to nudge it away again. Juni caught up, breathing heavily but smiling. She picked up the paper, holding it tight against her chest.
Together, the friends walked back to the park. The sun cast a warm, golden glow over the grass. Juni felt a wave of pride. She had kept Fish safe, and her drawings were completely unharmed.
Back on the Picnic Blanket, Juni arranged the three drawings in a neat row. Dog plopped down next to them, resting his chin on his paws. Fish swam to the front of his bowl, blowing three big bubbles in a row.
"You are a very good helper, Dog," Juni said, leaning over to tickle his soft ears. Dog let out a happy sigh, and Juni placed a shiny gold crayon right in the center of the blanket, ready to draw their next big adventure.
