Chasing the Winged Beast
The picnic basket was packed with sweet strawberries and tiny cheese cubes. Juni held the glass bowl carefully with both hands, making sure the water did not splash. Inside, her best friend swam in happy circles.
Beside the basket lay her most important creations. Juni had spent all morning drawing three magnificent creatures. They had long, sweeping tails, powerful wings, and scales colored in her favorite shade of bright teal.
"We are going on a grand safari," Juni whispered to the bowl. She placed the drawings on the checkered blanket. The creature in the crayon pictures looked ready to fly right off the page and into the clouds.
Suddenly, a playful swirl of air danced through the park. It snatched the three papers right off the blanket. Juni gasped as her precious winged beasts soared high into the air, swirling like autumn leaves.
"Oh no!" Juni cried. "My beasts are escaping!" She gripped the bowl tightly and ran down the stone walkway. The first drawing fluttered over a hedge, while the second sailed toward a quiet house.
The first paper landed softly in a patch of bright red tulips. Juni hurried over and scooped it up. "One beast captured," she whispered proudly, showing the drawing to her little swimming companion.
But the second drawing had drifted onto a nearby wooden porch. It landed right on a soft braided rug. A very large, very fluffy dog was slowly lowering his heavy head for a long afternoon nap.
"Wait!" Juni called out, running up the steps. "Don't sit on my dragon!" The big dog paused, his nose just inches from the paper. He blinked his warm eyes and let out a soft, curious whine.
Dog sniffed the paper. He looked at the teal creature, then looked up at Juni. With a gentle nudge of his wet nose, he pushed the drawing toward her. Juni smiled and carefully picked it up.
"Thank you, helper," Juni said, her voice warm. But just as she spoke, she saw the third drawing. It was tumbling far down the path, rolling over and over like a runaway wheel.
Dog let out a loud bark and scrambled down the steps. He was surprisingly fast for a sleepy pup. Juni followed as quickly as she could, keeping her bowl steady with every single step.
The wind was strong, but Dog was stronger. With one final leap, he placed his big, furry paw gently on the edge of the paper, stopping it right before it rolled into a puddle.
Juni caught up, breathing heavily. She looked at the drawing, then at Dog, and finally at her little companion swimming in the bowl. "We did it," she said, her heart full of quiet joy.
Together, the little parade marched back to the picnic blanket. Dog walked proudly beside Juni, keeping a watchful eye on the wind. The three teal beasts were safe and sound, ready for the feast.
Juni sat on the blanket and shared her treats. She gave Dog a piece of cheese, which he swallowed in one happy gulp. Then she noticed her friend in the bowl was staring intently at the picnic basket.
Fish blew three perfect bubbles that popped at the surface. Juni laughed out loud. "No, silly," she giggled, "the strawberries are way too big for your tiny mouth, but you can have the extra water drop!"
