Breeze and the Golden Scales
Under the shade of the porch, Juni tucked three precious papers under her arm. Each page showed a magnificent creature with purple scales and gold markings, drawn with her very best crayons. Today was the perfect day for an adventure.
Fish swam in happy circles within his glass home, his eyes wide as Juni stepped down onto the sidewalk. 'We are going to the deep forest, Fish,' Juni whispered, her voice full of serious mystery. 'Keep a lookout for dragons.'
The neighborhood path was quiet, bordered by tall trees that rustled like giant green feathers. Juni walked with careful, steady steps, balancing the water-filled bowl in both hands while keeping her drawings pressed tight against her side.
Suddenly, a playful swirl of air danced down from the branches. It snatched the first drawing right from Juni's grip. 'Oh!' she gasped, watching the purple-and-gold creature flutter away like a giant, colorful butterfly.
The paper drifted high over the bushes, sailing back toward the houses. Juni hurried after it, her boots pattering on the dirt. Fish bobbed gently in his bowl, watching the runaway artwork soar over a wooden fence.
The drawing landed softly on a nearby porch, right next to a large, sleeping dog. Dog was curled up in a warm patch of sun, his heavy eyelids closed as he snored a slow, rumbling tune.
Dog shifted in his sleep, rolling over slowly. His big paw stretched out, nearly pressing the delicate paper into the wooden floorboards. Juni held her breath, stopping at the bottom of the porch steps with wide eyes.
'Wait, please,' Juni whispered to the sleeping giant. She did not want her special reptile to get squished. She set Fish down safely on the bottom step, her heart beating a little faster as she reached upward.
Just as Juni's fingers brushed the paper, Dog opened one dark, curious eye. He let out a giant yawn, stretching his front legs forward. He looked at Juni, then down at the colorful drawing beneath his nose.
Instead of stepping on it, Dog tapped the paper gently with his nose. He looked up at Juni and wagged his tail, his eyes bright with a sudden desire to play. He seemed to understand exactly how important the drawing was.
Juni smiled, her worry melting away. 'You are a very helpful dragon-guard,' she said softly. She picked up the retrieved drawing, holding it close. Dog stood up, shook his fur, and trotted down the steps to join them.
With Dog leading the way, they walked together to the sunny meadow. Juni spread her teal-and-white blanket near the daisies. She placed Fish in the center, where the cool water caught the beautiful afternoon light.
Juni carefully lined up her three drawings on the blanket, placing a smooth, grey stone on each one so the wind could not steal them again. Dog lay down beside her, resting his chin on his paws contentedly.
They sat in the warm grass, sharing the quiet space. Juni looked closely at the edge of the meadow. There, half-hidden under a wild fern, a tiny lizard with a single gold spot on its tail sat perfectly still, watching them.
