Chasing the Golden Scales

The crayon box was empty because every single bright color was now on the paper. Juni admired her handiwork, tapping her chin thoughtfully. Today was the perfect afternoon to show her masterpieces to the world.

She packed her favorite teal knapsack with great care. Inside went a soft, folded picnic cloth and her three precious scale-beast drawings. Everything was ready for the grand outdoor exhibition.

Next came her most important guest. Fish swam in excited circles as Juni lifted his round glass home. 'You are going to love the sunshine,' she whispered, stepping out into the warm, bright day.

The journey down the neighborhood sidewalk required absolute concentration. Juni took slow, deliberate steps, watching the water sway. Fish peeked through the glass, his orange scales glittering like little coins.

They arrived at the grassy park, where the clover smelled sweet and fresh. Juni spread her teal picnic cloth under a friendly oak tree. She placed Fish right in the center so he had the best view.

With a dramatic flourish, Juni lined up the scale-beast drawings. 'This is the scale-beast,' she announced to Fish. 'He eats starlight and loves to dance.' Fish blew a tiny bubble of approval.

Suddenly, a mischievous gust of wind swooped down from the branches. It snatched the scale-beast drawings right off the cloth! Juni gasped as the papers swirled into the air like giant autumn leaves.

The first drawing fluttered high and landed gently in a bush. Juni scrambled across the grass and plucked it from the twigs. 'One safe!' she cheered, holding it tight against her chest.

But the other two drawings were sailing far away, drifting toward the street. Juni ran after them, her heart beating fast. She had to save her beautiful purple and gold creatures.

One drawing landed on a wide gray porch, right where Dog was enjoying a very deep afternoon nap. Dog let out a giant yawn, stretching his paws directly over the colorful paper.

'Wait, don't squish him!' Juni cried, skidding to a halt by the porch steps. Dog opened one dark eye and blinked. He looked at the drawing, then up at Juni, wagging his tail.

Dog sniffed the paper, realizing it was a very special treasure. He gently picked up the corner of the drawing with his teeth. He stood up, ready to join the rescue mission.

Together, they trotted back to the park. Dog carried his drawing proudly, his tail swishing like a flag. Juni held her recovered picture, feeling incredibly lucky to have such a helpful friend.

They returned to the picnic cloth where Fish was waiting patiently. Juni carefully laid the drawings down, weighting them with small, smooth stones. The scale-beasts were safe, and the gallery was officially open.

Dog curled up at the edge of the cloth, resting his chin on his paws. Fish blew three perfect bubbles in a row. Juni sat between her friends, sharing her imaginary world with the best audience ever.

Suddenly, Dog let out a mighty sneeze that sent the drawings fluttering again. Fish splashed in surprise, and Juni burst out laughing as she scrambled to catch the papers all over again!
