Midnight Reel Mystery
The rusted gates of the Old Movie Studio creaked in the midnight breeze. Joe adjusted his blue jacket and checked his watch. Beside him, Stoney the gorilla gave a low, eager rumble. They were hunting for the legendary lost director's cut.
Suddenly, a bright flashlight beam swept across the dusty gravel path. It was the Security Guard, humming a loud, off-key tune while chewing on a noisy bag of potato chips. Joe tapped Stoney's shoulder, pointing toward the shadow of Soundstage Four.
They slipped inside and climbed the spiral stairs to the Projection Booth. The air smelled of old celluloid and warm brass. On the desk lay a dusty manual. Joe traced the diagram of the projector gears with his finger.
To unlock the hidden wall safe, the projector's three gears had to align perfectly. Joe twisted the dials, but the heavy iron gears were stuck. Stoney grinned, stepped up, and gently nudged the largest wheel with her massive thumb.
With a satisfying metallic clunk, a secret panel behind the film rack popped open. Inside sat the Rare Film Reel, gleaming under the green desk lamp. Joe gasped, his eyes wide with awe at the beautiful, heavy silver canister.
Heavy footsteps echoed on the metal stairs outside. The Security Guard was coming up, still humming loudly. Joe quickly tucked the heavy reel under his arm. There was no time to run down the stairs.
Stoney scooped Joe up, stepped onto the window ledge, and swung gracefully down a thick, hanging studio cable. They landed softly in a pile of old foam stunt cushions just as the guard opened the booth door above.
Safe outside the gates, Joe laughed and patted Stoney's shoulder. He looked back to see the Security Guard at the window, shining his light on a banana Stoney had left behind on the projector. The guard took a bite, looking thoroughly confused.
