Cipher in the Dome

In the attic, Celly found the notebook behind a box of old records. Every page was rows of dots and tiny stars. "It's a cipher," he told Bear, already pulling a pencil from behind his ear. "A hundred questions, and one of them has an answer." Bear tapped the lamp's switch with a claw, approving.

The trick took an hour. Each star was a letter, counted by the dots, and the cord marked the key: green, for the planet-colored ink. Celly read it aloud, slowly. "Where the dome keeps its eye, the answer sleeps below." Bear was already at the window, nose pointed at the hill.

The Hilltop Observatory stood in the wind like a tired green helmet. Celly pushed the heavy door and it groaned open. Bear went first, sniffing the dusty dark, and Celly followed with the notebook held like a map.

Inside the Dome Room, light fell through the slit in beams. The Brass Telescope loomed in the center, pointing at a sky that had begun to show its first stars. "The dome's eye," Celly whispered. At its base sat a small round hatch.

The last line of the cipher was still smudged: three stars, one blurry. A wrong guess might mean a lock that wouldn't forgive. Celly's hand hovered over the hatch. Bear looked from the notebook to the hatch and waited, because this was Celly's call.

Celly sat on the floor and worked the smudged line, counting dots under the beams. The third star had four dots, not three. The word was MOON. He turned the hatch's dial to match, and it opened with a soft click.

Inside lay the Star Chest, its moon-shaped clasp glinting. Celly lifted the lid. A silver compass shaped like a star lay on green velvet, beside a rolled map of the moon. "He planned this for whoever was careful," Celly said.

Celly set the compass in Bear's paw, then wrapped his own scarf around Bear's shoulders against the draft. They sat under the open dome and traced the moon map until the real moon rose to match it.
