Broccoli Trees for Dinner
At dinnertime, Amara climbed into her chair in the kitchen. Bunny hopped up beside her and wiggled his nose. Mom set down a plate, and something new sat on it. Little green trees!
"Broccoli trees," said Mom. Amara looked at them. They were very green and very bushy. She tucked her hands under her legs. "Hmm," she said. She was not sure at all.
Mom picked up one tree. She popped it in her mouth and chewed. Then she smiled a big, happy smile. "Mmm," she said. "Crunchy." Nobody told Amara to eat hers. It was her plate, and her choice.
Amara picked up a tree by its stem. It was heavier than it looked. She held it up high, like a tiny flag, and Bunny leaned in close to see.
The tree wobbled in her fingers. Amara held it close to her face. She had a plan, and it had two possible first steps. Mom waited and said nothing.
What does Amara do with the broccoli tree first?
