Goodnight Parade for the Garden

The moon was so big and round that Koko decided it needed a goodnight too. He pulled on his black pajamas and picked up his black flashlight. "I'm in charge of this walk," he told Dog. Dog wagged so hard his whole back half wiggled.

"Rule one," said Koko, marching down the steps. "We say goodnight to every garden animal. Rule two: no sniffing the important parts." Dog sniffed a flowerpot anyway. Koko sighed like a very tired boss.

In the garden, everything was silver and quiet. The flashlight made a yellow circle on the path. Koko's feet went slap, slap on the cool stones, and Dog's nails tapped along behind, keeping time like a tiny drum.

Something rustled in the leaves. Koko lifted his chin. "Who goes there? It's me, the boss of the walk!" Dog tucked his nose behind Koko's knee, just in case the boss was wrong.

The path split in two. One way ran past the tall sunflowers, nodding in their sleep. The other sloped down toward the pond, where the moon lay on the water. Koko tapped his flashlight on his chin. A good leader had to pick.

Where does Koko lead the walk first?
