Secret of the Orange Blossom Rocket

Benjamin gripped the cardboard steering wheel, his heart thumping like a drum. Outside the porthole of his orange rocketship, the backyard garden transformed into a wild, uncharted planet waiting to be explored.

A tap on the cardboard hull made him jump. Maya peered through the window, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. Benjamin felt his face grow as hot as a freshly baked chocolate cake.

"Permission to come aboard, Captain?" Maya asked, holding a wooden trowel like a space laser. Benjamin nodded quickly, his tongue suddenly feeling twice its normal size as he scrambled to make room.

"We have to reach the Sunflower Nebula," Benjamin declared, pointing a shaky finger toward the tall stalks at the edge of the lawn. "But the steering thrusters are completely jammed!"

Maya grabbed a handful of orange marigold petals from her pocket. "We can use these for fuel!" she cheered, tossing them into the air. Benjamin gasped, his worries melting into the game.

They crawled out of the hatch and plunged into the Giant Sunflower Patch. The massive yellow flowers towered over them, turning the sunlight into a warm, golden haze that felt entirely magical.

Benjamin wanted to tell Maya how much he liked playing with her, but the words got stuck in his throat. He pointed at a fuzzy bumblebee instead. "Look, a fuzzy alien scout!"

Maya giggled and made alien buzzing noises. Benjamin laughed too, his chest filling with a sweet, fluttery feeling. He decided he needed a special token to show her how he felt.

"Follow me to the supply depot!" Benjamin shouted, running toward the old wooden shed. Maya zipped right behind him, her sneakers pattering softly on the dirt path.

Inside the shed, the air smelled of rich soil and dry terracotta. Benjamin searched the shelves, his hands brushing past seed packets until he found exactly what he was looking for.

He turned around, holding a small, perfectly round clay pot containing a tiny green sprout. "This is a rare cosmic star-flower," Benjamin whispered, holding it out with trembling hands.

Maya stepped closer, her eyes shining as she looked at the tiny plant. "It's beautiful, Benjamin. Is it for our spaceship garden?" She looked up, meeting his eyes.

"It's actually for you," Benjamin blurted out, his face turning the brightest shade of orange. "Because you're my favorite co-pilot in the whole galaxy." He held his breath.

Maya took the pot, a huge smile spreading across her face. "Thanks, Captain!" she said, placing a bright orange marigold petal behind his ear. "Now, let's go plant it!"

They ran back to the rocketship, ready to plant their cosmic star-flower in the fertile soil nearby. Benjamin felt lighter than a helium balloon floating in deep space.

As they knelt in the dirt, a sudden gust of wind blew Benjamin's orange paper helmet right off his head, landing perfectly onto a very confused garden gnome. They both doubled over laughing.
